Juggling Act

When I am ready to move into new territory in my work, it means consciously challenging myself to integrate specific elements in a composition.  An effective strategy is to create a study, a low-stakes platform to experiment with juggling all the variables.

My checklist was very specific:  square format; 4-plex structure; bold shapes; figure/ground tension; mid-range values; defined value shifts; transparency effects; glowing/flat and cool/warm hues; and 4 distinct palettes.  That’s a lot of balls to keep in the air at one time.

This detail image shows a portion of the center of this yet-to-be-quilted study that measures 44” square.  And yes, my checklist is complete!
